The Miami Marlins have traded shortstop Yunel Escobar to the Tampa Bay Rays for infielder Derek Dietrichreports Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.

Yunel Escobar was involved in the Marlins-Blue Jays blockbuster trade two weeks ago. Escobar, 30, had a 253/.300/.344 batting line with 9 homers and 51 RBI’s in 608 plate appearances last season with the Blue Jays.

Escobar displayed a homophobic slur on the eye-black stickers that he wore while playing against the Boston Red Sox on September 15. The Marlins did not want anything to do with that, so they chose to trade him.

Dietrich, 23, batted .279/.338/.457 with 14 homers and 75 RBI’s this year in High-A and Double-A.

The Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs were also interested in Yunel Escobar.
