Marlins Snag Two in Rule 5 Draft

Yesterday, the Marlins selected two players in the Rule 5 draft. Miami hopes they can contribute right away.

With their first round pick, the Marlins selected 25 year-old outfielder Alfredio Silverio, who was with the Los Angeles Dodgers farm system.

Silverio has shown signs of potential. He had a terrific season for Double-A Chattanooga, hitting .306/.340/.542 with 42 doubles, 18 triples, 16 home runs, 85 RBI’s and 11 steals in 132 games.

However, Silverio was involved in a car accident while visiting his home in the Dominican Republic in January. He had Tommy JohnSurgery on his elbow to repair damage suffered from the accident and was forced to miss the entire 2012 season. The Marlins have said they believe Silverio will start the season on the DL, but are optimistic he will be able to contribute to the team shortly after being cleared.

With their second round pick, the Marlins selected Braulio Lara from the Tampa Bay Rays minor league.

The 23-year-old southpaw has an incredible fastball, hitting over 100 mph in this year’s Dominican winter leagues. However, Lara still struggles with his command and his off speed pitches. This past season, Lara posted a 82/58 K/BB in 112 innings with a 6-10 record and a 5.71 ERA with High Class-A Charlotte. Lara has potential with an incredible fastball, but stil lneeds mechanical work. With the Marlins currently in rebuilding mode, they may be able to work with him exclusively and find a spot for him.
