Juan Direction: Marlins re-acquire Juan Pierre
- Updated: November 18, 2012
I guess he’s got that “Juan Thing”. Just days after Hurricane Loria swiftly swept through South Florida, the Marlins sign ex Black and Teal OF Juan Pierre.
Pierre will always be remembered for his stellar postseason in 2003, patrolling CF during the Marlins second championship run. While Pierre is still a fan favorite in Miami, it seems like a curious signing following Jeffery Loria’s 2012 edition of the Miami Marlins blue light sale.
Pierre has shown despite his advanced age that he can still produce solid numbers in a full time role. With division rival Philadelphia in 2012, Pierre hit .307/.351/.371 in 130 games.
Something’s gotta give now. After looking at Pierre’s numbers, it appears to be a more that makes more sense for a ballclub that is looking to take the next step towards a playoff run, rather than a team that is in the initial stage of a rebuilding process. Pierre does provide a consistent presence in the leadoff spot, replacing Emilio Bonifacio and Jose Reyes, but is it worth the effort after surrendering nearly the entire 2012 opening day roster over the last four months?
The way things have unfolded this offseason it feels like this will not be the last move made by the franchise.
