Jose Reyes Criticizes Loria, Marlins
- Updated: February 16, 2013
In case you were wondering how Jose Reyes felt about his former team, he let the world know today.
Last off season, Jose Reyes left the New York Mets and signed a huge six year $106 million dollar contract. He was the corner stone to owner Jeffrey Loria’s then ‘dream team’.
However, things did not go as planned last year as the Marlins finished with a 69-93 record sitting comfortably in last place in the NL East. The underperforming season resulted in one of the biggest fire sale’s in recent MLB memory.
At the Toronto Blue Jay’s spring training media day, Reyes took the time to open up about his former team.
According to ESPN’s Jayson Stark, Reyes told a story about how he was at dinner one night with Marlins’ owner Jeffrey Loria. Loria was encouraging Reyes to go out and get a bigger house in Miami, as well as suggested great areas to live. Loria went on to also explain how he had no intentions on dealing Reyes.
Two days later, Reyes was dealt to the Blue Jays. He said he didn’t receive a single warning from Loria before the trade. He thought it was a joke at first until his agent called him confirming the deal.
Reyes went on to explain how he hasn’t spoken once to Loria or a single person affiliated with the Miami Marlins since the trade. He said he has no interest in talking to anyone and feels “betrayed” by the franchise.
Reyes was then asked what he would tell a free agent who was talking to the Miami Marlins. Reyes went on to say “I don’t have to tell them nothing. Look what happened to me. I was signed to play there for six years and I played only one. All they have to do is see what happened to me.”
Reyes finished his rant by stating he’s fine now that he’s not in Miami anymore. But he sympathized with fans saying, “I feel bad for the fans in Miami.”
